Jackson Heights residents will have an opportunity to watch a documentary on their neighborhood and meet the filmmaker.

Residents are invited to attend a free screening of “In Jackson Heights,” a documentary on the daily life of the diverse neighborhood, on October 23rd beginning at 5:30 pm.

The screening will take place at P.S. 69 (77-02 37th Ave).

The three-hour documentary focuses on Jackson Heights as the quintessential melting pot, by filming ethnic parades, the annual Queens Pride Parade and various community and religious meetings.

Frederick Wiseman, who has won a Peabody Award for one of his 40 documentaries, made the film.

Following the screening, attendees will have a chance to ask questions of Wiseman and Jackson Heights’ Councilman Daniel Dromm.

The screening is limited to just 200 seats and even though it is free, residents have to book tickets in advance. Nearly 100 tickets have already been booked.

There are also 28 standby tickets available, which allow those to attend if there are open seats at the time of the screening.

Zipporah Films, the independent distribution company of Wiseman documentaries, released the film. The company is hosting the screening with the support of Ford Foundation’s JustFilms, Dromm and the Queens World Film Festival.

As of now Zipporah Films does not plan on hosting any additional screenings, according to a spokeswoman. However, it will air at the New York Film Forum from November 4th through November 17th.

Wiseman and Dromm will each, separately, attend several viewings.

The documentary debuted in Venice, Italy on September 4th, where it was very well received, according to a Zipporah Films spokeswoman. The film then debuted in the United States on October 4th at the New York Film Festival.

The company decided to host a free screening to give Jackson Heights residents a chance to see the film.

“We hope the residents in Jackson Heights like the film,” a spokeswoman said.
