Donate reusable items you don’t need and take home some treasures, too, at a community reuse event in Elmhurst next week.
The free ‘Stop ’N’ Swap’ event, hosted by GrowNYC, a non-profit organization, will take place at P.S. 13, located at 5501 94th St. from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 12.
Participants are asked to bring clean, functioning, reusable items that they no longer need, such as clothing, electronics, games, books, and appliances at the event to be picked up or swapped by others who will also be giving up items.
The event, according to the organizers, is an environmentally friendly resort to tossing out unwanted items that would otherwise go to landfills.
According to GrowNYC, the average New York City household discards about 2,000 pounds of waste a year.
GrowNYC has a goal of hosting one Stop ‘N’ Swap in every one of the 59 New York City districts a year. Recent events have seen upwards of 600 people attend.
It is not required to donate something to bring an item home, but participants are limited to attending six Stop ’N’ Swap events per year in order to ensure item availability to everyone.
Certain items that are not accepted at these events include:
– furniture
– large items
– tube televisions
– open food
– unsealed personal care products
– medicine
– dirty or ripped clothing
– fabric scraps
– incomplete toys or games
– non-working electronics
– magazines
– sharp objects
