An independently-owned Sunnyside veterinary office has continued to keep the community’s pets healthy and safe throughout the pandemic.
Sunnyside Pet Healthcare & Dental Center, located at 47-04 Greenpoint Ave., offers medical care for cats and dogs of all ages as well as veterinary dental work.
The clinic, which has been in the neighborhood for more than three decades, has been open every single business day throughout the pandemic.
“My staff has been here through the early days of the pandemic when everybody was locked up in their homes,” said Stuart Goldenberg D.V.M., who is the owner and chief veterinarian at the center. “My staff was venturing out and putting themselves at risk because they wanted to make sure that our patients were being cared for.”
Since the pandemic struck, Dr. Goldenberg has added a number of coronavirus safety precautions to protect pet owners from COVID-19.
For example, only one person per pet is allowed to come into the clinic and there is a temperature check at the door. Masks are also required to be worn at all times and the number of people in the waiting room is minimized as much as possible.
“We don’t want to risk either ourselves or our clients,” Goldenberg said. “We try to keep everybody safe during this difficult time.”
The Sunnyside Pet Healthcare & Dental Center — also called Sunnyside Animal Clinic — stands out from other veterinary clinics in that it offers a multitude of dental services for pets as well a full range of medical services.
“We’re very proud of the work we do with dental care,” Goldenberg said. “We have a whole dental suite that we’ve developed over many years and I’ve done a lot of extra studies in veterinary dentistry.”
Goldenberg is a founding member of the International Veterinary Dentistry Institute and studied at the Animal Dental Training Center (ADTC) Postgraduate Center for Veterinary Dental & Oral Surgery and The NAVC Institute under the tutelage of the world’s best veterinary dental educators.
Sunnyside Pet Healthcare & Dental Center is the only veterinary office that offers dental X-rays in the neighborhood, Goldenberg says.
Clinic staff also perform routine medical checkups and surgeries. The clinic offers full healthcare services catered to a pet’s age — from puppies and kittens to geriatric dogs and cats.
“We tailor what we do for each patient’s life stage because the needs of a young dog are a lot different than the needs of an older dog,” Goldenberg said.
The veterinarian has also worked as an emergency room vet and has a special interest in feline medication.
Goldenberg said his clinic has seen an “incredible” increase in the number of new patients in recent times, as many New Yorkers have adopted pets this year to keep them company at home.
A lot of first-time pet owners have come into the clinic, he added.
Goldenberg said the Sunnyside Pet Healthcare & Dental Center prides itself in being a local privately-owned animal clinic that cares for both its patients and employees.
He said he and his staff have formed a bond with many neighborhood pets and their owners.
“Our entire healthcare team is committed to providing personal attention and to really look at the unique concerns of the individual pet owner,” Goldenberg said. “We don’t try to be a boxcutter operation, we try to take care of pets at an individual level.”
He said it’s not always easy to compete with the corporate veterinary clinics, but Sunnyside Pet Healthcare & Dental Center is committed to the community and has served many of its clients for decades.
“We’re trying to fight the battle to keep a local neighborhood business running,” Goldenberg said. “It’s heartbreaking to see these local businesses closing during the pandemic.”
The veterinarian said he is proud to be a small business owner and proud of his employees’ commitment to people’s pets during the pandemic.
“The people who work for me are braving it because they want to take care of pets, which really says something about their dedication,” he said.
