A scooter rider is in critical condition after plowing into an SUV whose driver ran a stop sign at an intersection in Elmhurst Thursday.
The victim, 55, was riding northbound on 58th Avenue at around 2:20 p.m. when he smashed into a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox in the intersection at Seabury Street, police said.
The Chevy driver, a 34-year-old man, was heading westbound on 57th Avenue and failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection, police said.
The victim crashed into the SUV and was thrown off his gas-powered scooter before landing on the pavement, police said.
The scooter driver was transported by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst in critical condition with severe trauma to his head. It is unclear if the victim was wearing a helmet.
The Chevy driver remained at the scene and did not sustain any injuries. There were two passengers in the SUV at the time of the collision — including an infant — and they were not injured, police said.
No arrests have been made.
The investigation is ongoing by the NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Squad.

These scooter, ebike , moped, ect don’t belong in the street. They don’t stop for stop signs, red lights pedestrians. They shouldn’t be surprised when they get run over.
