Several candidates are running to represent the 25th Council District—a position that is currently occupied by the term-limited Danny Dromm.
In our latest podcast, we talk to Yi (Andy) Chen who is one of the candidates campaigning for the seat.
Chen, who was born in China and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 13, is one of nine candidates vying for the seat that covers Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. The primary is scheduled to take place on June 22.
Chen discusses the need to support the neighborhood’s small businesses; his advocacy for affordable and accessible healthcare; and his views on the Department of Education and why he believes the agency needs to preserve the gifted & talented program and maintain specialized high schools.
He also discusses anti-Asian hate crimes and school bullying.
Chen, who graduated from Queensborough Community College, has a business background. He started a medical supply business with friends after college.
He is also member of the NYPD’s 110th Precinct Auxiliary.
Chen has been endorsed by Council Member Peter Koo, Assembly Member Jeffrion Aubry and mayoral candidate Ray McGuire.
The other candidates in the race include Fatima Baryab; Suraj Jaswal; Shekar Krishnan; Liliana Melo; Manuel Perez; Alfonso Quiroz; William Salgado and Carolyn Tran.
