A man on a moped pulled up beside a livery cab and shot a passenger through the cab window in Elmhurst early Sunday.

The suspect, who was on the moped with another man, rode up alongside the livery cab and opened fire when the vehicle stopped at a red light at Broadway and 81st Street around 1:20 a.m., police said.

The gunman fired off several rounds into the back seat of the cab where 27-year-old Diego Vasquez was sitting. A bullet struck Vasquez, of North Corona, in the chest, police said.

EMS rushed Vasquez to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The livery cab driver was unharmed and there have been no arrests, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
