A 47-year-old Lyft driver was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning when he was struck by a driver who was allegedly impaired by alcohol, police said.
The ride-share driver had been headed southbound on Fresh Pond Road at the intersection of Elliot Avenue at about 4 a.m. when his 2016 Toyota Rav4 was hit by a 2014 Ford Explorer, the NYPD said.
Surveillance video of the crash from a nearby business showed the Ford Explorer crashing head on into the passenger side of the Toyota Rav4.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged and ended up on the sidewalk in front of a store that sells and repairs phones.
Emergency medical responders brought the Lyft driver to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His family identified him as Mohammed Hossain and said he was the father of three children, PIX11 reported.
Hossain’s 30-year-old passenger was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and treated for minor injuries, police said.
Erik Chimborazo, the 22-year-old Brooklyn resident behind the wheel of the Ford Explorer, was taken into police custody and brought to Elmhurst Hospital for evaluation.
He was charged with vehicular manslaughter, operating a vehicle without an inspection certification, license and insurance, and Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI) by alcohol, police said.
A DWAI violation refers to having a blood alcohol content of more than .05 but less than .07, or other evidence of impairment, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
