Jackson Heights woman charged with animal cruelty, cops find 55 cats, 12 dogs and 2 turtles in her home

44 88 Street

25-44 82 Street

April 26, 2016 By Christian Murray

A Jackson Heights woman has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty for allegedly keeping more than 50 animals in an unsanitary conditions, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.

Elizabeth Grant, 48, allegedly kept the animals in such squalor that veterinary professionals claimed they suffered from malnutrition to respiratory infections and many other painful conditions.

At least one dog was in such poor health it had to be euthanized, according to the District Attorney.

“The defendant is accused of permitting her pets to live in deplorable conditions. The floor and furnishings in the defendant’s home were allegedly covered in feces, fur and urine,” said Queens District Attorney Richard A Brown in a statement. “The smell of ammonia was so overwhelming, animal rescue workers had to wear respirators to breathe, as well as protective clothing when entering the premises.”

Grant, who lives at 25-44 82nd Street, was arraigned today on 4 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and 63 counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failure to provide sustenance. Grant was released on her own recognizance and ordered to return to court on May 10, 2016.

If convicted, Grant faces up to two years in prison, Brown said.

Police uncovered the alleged cruelty after an officer from the 115th Precinct went to the defendant’s home on January 6, 2016, to visit Grant’s mother, according to the complaint.

Despite no one answering the officer’s knock, the door was open and the officer allegedly observed numerous animals inside the home and that the interior was filthy.

The officer returned to the home on January 28, 2016, with members of the ASPCA, and Grant answered the door. The officer allegedly noticed excessive amounts of feces, fur and the smell of urine throughout the main floor, along with numerous flies amid extreme clutter and trash. The home’s ceiling was peeling and rotting and it is alleged that many of the animals had patches of fur missing, crusted eyes and one cat did not appear to be able to walk.

According to the complaint, a court-authorized search warrant was issued that same day and the officer returned to the defendant’s home with members of the ASPCA, who rescued 55 cats, 12 dogs and two turtles.

A licensed veterinarian and supervisor of the ASPCA’s Forensic Sciences unit examined and/or supervised the examination of the 67 cats and dogs and determined that many had dental diseases, ear mites, respiratory infections, as well as pain and discomfort from a host of other ailments.

A dog by the name of Dorothy was allegedly vomiting and had diarrhea related to chronic kidney and liver disease. A large part of her coat was matted with feces and she had severe dental disease and a chronic illness associated with her digestive system. Due to Dorothy’s extremely poor health a decision was made to euthanize her.

Brown listed the condition of other animals outlined in the criminal complaint:

* A dog named Bond was allegedly dehydrated and weak. His fur had a foul stench and was matted with feces and urine. Bond showed signs he was in pain with every movement and his skin was inflamed. His overgrown claws were caked with fecal matter that caused inflammation of his paws and made it painful to walk. He also had an untreated kidney infection, severe dental disease and many of his teeth had rotted out.

* A cat named Augustus was allegedly emaciated from prolonged lack of food. Augustus also had a severe dental disease, an ear mite infection in both ears and suffered with blood-filled ear flaps.

* A dog named Ewok had an unpleasant stench coming from his fur and a swollen eyelid gland. The dog’s urethra protruded from the end of his penis and he experienced discomfort from both an ocular and ear disease.

* A cat named Gracie allegedly had cerebellar hypoplasia, a problem with balance due to a virus infection as well as scarring from an untreated ear mite infection.

Only two animals, cats named Howie and Kobe, did not show any significant health abnormalities.

C’mon, guys, you’re being too hard on Ms. Grant. She was wonderful! She provided my turtle companion, Tina, and me plenty to eat: fleas, mites, a variety of fungi and turd blossoms as far as the eye could see. Not only that but a childless adult who ignores you is turtle paradise. Now I’m stuck in some kid’s terrarium in Westchester. He thinks it’s funny to blow marijuana smoke in my face and feed me French fries.

Nobody cares about us turtles.

Those are not the real neighbors and the police dont like to be challenged just like you ms rogers.the pets will return to the rightful owners due to the botched up job on camera from the police. The two dogs died during the seizure from their ill treatment so none of these animals are or were safe and sound. LEAVE YOUR REAL NAME MS ROGERS SO I CAN SEND YOU REAL PICTURES AND VIDEO OF WHAT WAS REALLY HAPPENING,BOY THE COCKY COPS MADE ALOT OF MISTAKES ALONG WITH THE YOUNG CHILDREN BOZO. Regardless of whether or not these animals were “cared for” properly as THE PERSON WRITING IN CAPS suggests,

It is animal cruelty to have that many animals in such a confined space – point. blank. There is no room for discussion, argument, or validation here. It doesn’t matter if you had help, witnesses, shampoo, or anything else that helped you sleep at night. It was too many animals, and each one had a worse life because it experienced the crowded life you gave them.

Sure, I am ignorant, the entire media are “lying” and one-sided; the DA is vindictive, the ASPCA and the police are liars, too and the people quoted by NY 1 are imposters, not true neighbors – who miraculously have never revealed themselves yet. Doesn’t it sound the least bit strange to you that the entire world is wrong and you’re the only person who is right? Does the word denial mean anything to you? Ms Grant will have her day in court and I’m sure when she is found guilty, she’ll claim the judge is part of this grand conspiracy. Thank heaven that the animals are now safe and sound.

Ignorant. You are the ignorant one who believes that hoarding all those animals isn’t a problem. People entering the house needed respirators!!! Isn’t that a problem in your eyes? The living conditions are deplorable and I’m actually surprised that the mentally ill woman and her just as sick mother were allowed to move back into that house. Unfortunately, most hoarders don’t realize their situation and will continue to fight everyone with their denial.
Having you continue to defend them is only propagating the situation and preventing them from receiving mental health.

The Grants are caring hard workers

Listen Elaine Rogers many pets can be taken care of if your a hard worker with money to invest in care and food and workers to help you which tbe Grants did they took in homeless and strays that shelters would and couldnt take out of the kindness of their heart .Maybe you couldnt take care of alot of pets or people because your lazy and cheap and a nasty judgemtal bitch but the Grants took the time ,money and care to save lives and nurture them. Many volunteers worked and helped the Grants you dont know the real story because the Grants were never interviewed and no ppictures shown of their healthy animals or the break in and raid so you with only a one sided article to read to make your decision is a judgemental idiot with no facts

It is impossible to convince those who kow-tow to authority that this scenario, or something similar, could happen to them.
Many of the people commenting here make it clear that they couldn’t care less about Elizabeth Grants animals. I’d be willing to bet that other than participating in an online feeding frenzy as ignorant people tend to do, not one of them has ever followed up regarding what happened to ALL of the so-called “rescues animals” that they never wouldn’t have been bothered to help. I hope that the authorities invade their privacy, hijack the elderly with assets, paint them as abusers of people and maybe also animals too, and only then will they find out how ignorant, petty, and mean they were chiming in on something they know little to nothing about.

Animal hoarding is a disorder, which is very real and very serious. You unwillingness to recognize that it exists is why animals today remain in these house of horrors. And the joke is that Ms. Grant eats meat! She does indeed love animals, when they’re served on a plate with condiments.

The article states they euthanized only one, not all 67 pets. (The fact that 67 and pets should ever appear in the same sentence is disgraceful and deranged!) it shows you just how dellusional this ghost caretaker is that they can’t even see the words as they are written. It’s no surprise that they couldn’t see the ever more horrific consequences of hoarding right under their own nose!

Interesting. I’ve been noticing fewer stray cats for the past year, and here I thought it was the Chinese restaurants in the area were responsible. Little did I know that they were on their way to that house of horrors. Given the choice, I’m sure a lot of those cats would have preferred being severed on a plate of lo mein.

I stopped reading once I saw 55 cats. I mean, really, 55 cats! Why does this even have to go to court? They should just give this old maid a rocking chair, a cabbage patch doll and a big old bottle of klonopin.

I just saw the NY1 segment and that neighbor and eye witness is saying the animals that were brought outside by the authorities were abused. She saw it with her own eyes. What makes this story even more repulsive is that while Ms Grant seems mentally ill for not being able to determine the condition she was living in, as well as those animals, her mother NEVER raised the issue to authorities either.
They should both be thrown in a jail cell, given polluted water to drink and no toilet. Let them live out the rest of their years in filth. It sickens me that while they could leave their house for fresh air, they allowed those animals to be held prisoners.
Besides those abused animals, imagine what it must be like for the neighbors to live next to that. THANK GOD the Police arrived when they did! Lock them up and throw away the key.
They should both be ashamed.

This thread is good. I’m going to assume the person writing in CAPITAL letters is Ms. Grant since from the rambling writings it’s clearly someone who is stressed out. All I can say from reading these comments is that the courts will have to decide for themselves whether the Police Officer or Ms. Grant is telling the truth. All I know is I’m hoping those poor animals are being cared for and not traumatized in the least. They’re poor defenseless animals in a cruel world.

Could Ms. Grant be telling the truth? I, for one, would love to see pictures that were taken. Does anyone know where they can be seen? Could Ms. Grant be a victim of government officials gone rogue? Can JacksonHeightsPost.com get a reporter over to Ms. Grant’s place for an interview?

This JH resident wants answers since this poor woman’s life is spiraling out of control. Does anyone know her well that can chime in?

Hey, the Grants should hold an open house for the community and press so that everybody can see with their own two eyes how pristine and clean that home is. That way, people can come to their own conclusions. I for one would like to petition them to do so! Until then, we can believe the words of the neighbors who witnessed things and quoted on NY1 and I say convict, convict, convict!

NOT,HIDE THE TRUTH AND BELIEVE THE NONSENSE TO DESTROY A GOOD CITIZEN WHO WAS JUST TRYING TO HELP ANIMALS AND NOT THROW THEM OUT IN THE COLD WITH NO COAT LIKE THE POLICE DID TO MS GRANT AND HER MOTHER ON THE NIGHT OF THE BREAK IN SEIZURE AND RANSACKING WITH NO WARRANT AND NO VOUCHER GIVEN FOR THE. PETS WHICH IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT. A MINUTE AFTER THE ANIMALS WERE REMOVED FROM THE GRANTS HOME THEY SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR HEALTH BECAUSE THE STRESS OF THE TERRORIZATION OF THE SEIZURE AND CHASING AFTER THEM AND THROWING OVER FURNITURE TO GRAB THEM HARSHLY. INTHEIR LOVING HOME ALONE WILL BE A SHOCK TO THEANIMALS SYSTEM AND CAUSE SEUZURES AND PANIC ATTACKS DUE TO HUNTING THESE ANIMALS DOWN THAT WERE RUNNING FROM ASPCA WORKERS AND GRABBING THEM HARSHLY AND THROWING THEM IN CAGES TO SMALL ON TOP OF EACH OTHER AND LEAVING THE FRONT DOOR S ND WINDOWS OPEN FOR 7AND A HALF HOURS IN THE COLD AND THE TRUCK LEFT OPEN FOR THE ANIMALS TO FREEZE,THIIS WAS NOT HUMANE AT ALL AND THE ILL TREATMENT BY THE ASPCA CAUSED THE ANIMALS TO BECOME VERY SCARED SO ANYTHING THAT RESULTED WITH THE PETS AFTER THEY LEFT THE IMMEDIATE PHYSICAL CAREGIVING OF THE GRANTS IS THE FAULT OF THE ASPCA AND THE POLICE FOR ALLOWING. IT BECAUSE THE POLICE SPENT THEIR TIME THREATENING TO ARREST THE GRANTS FOR ASKING ANY QUESTIONS AND KICKING THEM OUT OF THEIR OWN HOME IN THE COLD INSTEAD OF MAKING SURE THE ASPCA WERE NOT RANSACKING THE GRANTS HOUSE AND TERRORIZING THE ANIMALS AND THROWING THEM HARSHLY IN CAGES AND GRABBING THEM SEVERELY SHOCKING THEIR SYSTEM INSTEAD OF TREATING THEM HUM ANELY .LORRAINE VULTAGGIO LED THIS BREAK IN WITH NO WARRANT SHOWN AND NO VOUCHER GIVEN WITH THE TERRORIZATION OF THE ANMALS AND THE RANSACKING OF THE HOUSE.SHE KICKED OUT MS GRANTS MOTHER INTO THE FREEZING COLD SAYING THEY WERE JUST CHECKING THE PETS NOT TAKING THEM WHICH WAS A PREDETERMINED LIE.THE GRANTS WERE TOLD BY SEVERAL POLICE OFFICERS WE CAN LIE AND USE TRICKERY TO GET WHAT WE WANT.I HOPE THESE PEOPLE. ASPCA and the police leaving the door open in the house. for hours for the animals to freeze and the door open to the ASPCA truck for hours to freeze the animals to death. with no care from the ASPCA and the Police and when the Grants asked any questions they were told they would be arrested. They were never shown the warrant during the break in and seizeure and were told they would get a voucher and receopt for the animals and in the end they were told they would NEVER SEE THEIR ANIMALS AGAIN !!!!!!

NUMBER OF PETS AT THE GRANT HOUSEHOLD IS EXAGERREATED.As a witness to the seizure with no warrant,I witnessed with the door left open in the freezing cold and the Grants kicked out in their slippers into the street. The animals were chased through the house for furniture thrown over.THE ANIMALS WERE DRAGGED OUT OF THE HOUSE!!THE CAGES WERE TO SMALL FOR THEM AND THE DOGS WERE CRYING AND BARKING LOUD! THE CATS WERE MEOWING AND THEY WERE THROWN ON TOP OF EACH OTHER IN TINY CAGES. I WANT TO ADD NOT ONLY WAS THE GRANTS DOOR LEFT OPEN IN THE FREEZING COLD FOR 7AND A HALF HOURS IN THE FREEZING COLD AND THEIRVWINDOWS LEFT OPEN AND I WITNESSING ANIMALS BEING CHASED AND FURNITURE THROWN OVER BUT ALSO ALL PETS WERE LEFT IN THE TRUCK WOTH THE DOOR OPEN IN FREEZING COLD TEMPERATURESS FOR HOURS,I EVEN TOOK VIDEO FOOTAGE OF THIS AND PICTURES TO SHOW HOW THE ASPCA WERE MISTREATING THE ANIMALS AND MAKING THEM VERY SICK,ALL ANIMALS WERE SHAKING AND MAKING NOISES IN THEIR CAGES AND NO CARE WAS BEING GIVEN TO THEM FROM ASPCA WORKERS BECAUSE THE ASSPCA WORKERS WERE LAUGHING AND JOKING AND TAKING FUN PICTURES IN FRONT OF THE GRANTS HOUSE AS THE POLICE STOOD AROUND THREATENING THE GRANTS EVERY SECOND THAT THEY WERE GOING TO ARREST THEM. AND NEVER PRODUCING A WARRANT THEY ASKED TO SEE AND PROMISING THEM A RECEIPT AND VOUCHER TO ACCOUNT FOR EACH ANIMAL AND AT THE END OF THIS TERRORIZATION FOR THE GRANTS AND THE ANIMALS THE POLICE TOLD THE GRANTS GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE OR WE WILL ARREST YOU AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR ANIMALS AGAIN!!!! IF ANY PET BECAME SICK A MINUTE AFTER THIS SEIZURE THEN THAT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE GRANTS IT IS THE FAULT OF THE PEOPLE LEADING THE SEIZURE THE POLICE AND THE ASPCA BECAUSE THOSE ANIMALS WERE TERRORIZED WITH THEIR HAIR STANDING ON EDGE AND SHAKING.SO THIS SEIZURE ALONE BEING THROWN IN A CAGE AND NOT GIVEN THEIR REGULAR FOOD AND THE LOVE FROM THE GRANTS AND THEIR USUAL BED,WALKS AND FREEDOM,THAT ALONE WILL BE A SHOCK TO THE A PETS SYSTEM. AND CAUSE A SERIES OF ILLNESSES,FEARS,CONVULSIONS AND PANIC ATTACKS BEING SEIZED,CAGED AND BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM THEIR HOME AND THEIR MOMMY AND FAMILY OF OTHER PETS,HEAT AND LIGHT AND COMFORT OUT OF A CAGE AND IN A NICE BED.ANY ILLNESSES THE ANIMALS OCCURRED A MINUTE AFTER THE SEIZURE WAS MOST PROBABLY CAUSED BY THE PETS BEING GRABBED AND THROWN IN CAGES TO BE TERRORIZED FEELING SCARED AND HELPLESS TAKEN AWAY FROM THEIR REGULAR BED,FOOD,HEAT,LIGHT,FREEDOM,TOYS,WALKS, PARKS,FRIENDS,FAMILY ETC..ANIMALS ARE JUST LIKE PEOPLE AND BEING INCARCERATED FOR NO REASON WOULD MAKE ANYONE SICK AND DESTROYED AND THIS COULD AFFECT ANYONES HEALTH. I AM WITNESS THAT THE GRANTS DID NOT HAVE THAT MANY PETS AND THE PETS THEY HAD WERE WELL TAKEN CARE OF,WITH LOTS OF FOOD WATER,BEDS,BATHS,HEAT ,LIGHT,TOYS AND LOTS OF LOVE!!

WITNESS TO THE ACTUAL EVENTS

These responses seem like they are written by the fictitios animals .As the caregiver and cleaner in the Grants house.I want to state for the record there was never any trouble with the Grants or their pets.On January 6 according to me as witness and the cameras no doors were open and no one came in But on January 28th an illegal break in occurred by the police which terrifified Ms. Grants mom and Lauraine Vultaggio and her team kicked the poor elderly lady into the street in the snow in her slippers and ransaced the house, doors were knocked over along with beds torn up while chasing and trying to grab their well loved pets, this is all on camera and pictures were taken. The pets were terrified along with the Grants as.they watch their house be destroyed and their pets be terrorized running in all direction to get away from these people. No warrant was ever shown or produced at the scene. No receipt for the animals was ever given to the Grants and by law when the police take a citizens they have to producw a receipt for that or should be immediately given back to the person because not even the police can take peoples merchandise without giving a receipt legally.ALL FACTS IN THIS JOURNALISTS VISCIOUS ENDEAVOR TO FRAME THE OWNER LEAVING HER STATEMENT AND LETTING HER SHOW PICTURES OF HER WELL TAKEN CARE OF PETS AND CLEAN HOUSE THAT WAS BROLEN INTO ON JANUARY 28TH AND RANSACKED WHILE HER PETS AND ELDERLY MOM WERE TERRORIZED ALONG WITH HER. NO CITIZEN SHOULD HAVE TO READ A STORY OF COUNTLESS LIES LIKE THIS! ANY JOURNALIST,POLICE OFFICER OR ANY OTHER CAREER THAT INVOLVES LIES AND TRICKERY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN AND NOT COMMWNDED FOR ABUSING AND ACCUSING PEOPLE WITHOUT EVEN LETTING THE ACTUAL PERSON YOUR ACCUSING SPEAK TO COUNTERACT AND DIFFUSE ALL THE LIES TO MAKE IT A REAL STORY NOT A FICTITIOUS PLOT TO FRAME A CITIZEN THAT CARES FOR ANIMALS,THE ELDERLY AND PETS ETC..

What can we do as concerned citizens to condemn that house? You can even see the trash on the porch!

Once you hit double digit numbers with animals In a house of that size, there’s a huge problem. Sounds like there’s a lot of denial, which is kind of typical with hoarders. Wow, there’s even what looks like garbage on the terrace.

Seems as if animal names and conditions are fictious because we never hear from credible sources such as the owners or people that knew them.Journalists who create these fictitious stories should analyze why they became writers because it should be to get the whole story and talk to the owners and not make up fictitious names and conditions of animals to sell an article falsely and misrepresent a caring person in the community that is trying to help animals. No one in any profession should be allowed to lie and keep their job, just like no one should be able to break in your house and steal your property and make up stories. why your property should not be returned back using media hype to twist the facts and destroy an obvious animal lover with an incredibly big heart!!

Who leaves their door open in queens?Police officers usually break into houses people dont leave the door open for them. How does the author of this article or the police officer know the animals names when they never spoke to the owners. If those animals were as sick as they were saying they would have barked and meowed and been heard a mile away yet no commentary on animal complaints from valid people.Just a media hype bullshit story with made up animal names and conditions to try to validate an obvious break in to this womans house because no one leaves their door open to police and her property and pets taken violating the first amendment and the made up accusations that the animals had these conditions that is not quoted by an actual veteranarian seemingly look like false allegation to justify an illegal break in and taking a citizens property with no vallid reason other then the police can seize your property at any time and us citizens have to sit down and shut up and let our property be taken as media hype lying journalist will prey on a law abiding person caring for animals and make up viscious stories about the woman to sell an article and make it juicy!!What makes the story more ridiculous is randomly naming the animals with no quotes from the actual owners so of course the animals names aref ictitios and so are there made up health conditions.
