An East Elmhurst man was arrested Wednesday, nearly a year after he crashed his car into another vehicle in Maspeth, killing a 35-year-old father of two.

Galib Dervisevic, 21, was collared on charges of criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and speeding–for the March 23, 2020 collision that left Staten Islander Jesse McCalip dead, police said.

McCalip was attempting to merge into the far right lane of the eastbound Brooklyn Queens Expressway when his 2020 Hyundai Elantra was struck by Dervisevic in a 2017 Dodge Charger near Exit 39 – Queens Boulevard.

The Charger hit the rear of the Elantra, causing it to slide along the concrete wall until it spun around in the opposite direction of traffic, according to the NYPD Highway District’s investigation.

McCalip, who worked as a vet technician at Elmhurst Animal Emergency Hospital, was unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. The FDNY got him out of the car and EMS rushed him to Elmhurst Hospital, but he couldn’t be saved.

Dervisevic, of 78th Street, remained at the scene of the collision, but was not arrested at the time.
