Despite an uptick in shootings, crime continues to fall in the greater Jackson Heights area.

Captain Brian Hennessy, commander of the 115th precinct that covers Jackson Heights and north Corona, reported that the number of crimes fell nearly 5 percent for the 28-day period through May 17, compared to the same 28-day period a year ago.

Hennessy, who was speaking at the police community council meeting Tuesday, said that there were 135 major incidents reported during the period, compared to 142 for the same 28-day period a year ago.

The biggest decline in the past 28 days was in the number of grand larcenies, falling from 59 incidents last year to 47.

The number of assaults also fell. There were 29 incidents in the 28-day period ending May 17, compared to 33 for the same period a year ago.

However, the number of robberies was up, with 24 incidents in the 28-day period ending May 17, compared to 17 last year.

Of those robberies, five involved businesses, with two businesses robbed at gunpoint. The Metro PCS store on Astoria Blvd and a candy store on 80th Street and 37th Ave. were both held up at gunpoint.

The number of burglaries has rose, with 19 incidents reported in the past 28 days compared to 16 for the same period a year ago.

“The majority are east of 95th Street, between 32nd Ave and Roosevelt Ave,” Hennessy said.

For the year through May 17, Hennessy said the precinct is down 94 crimes overall, for a decrease of 13.4 percent, compared to the same period last year.

There have been no murders, compared to two at this point last year.

However, there has been an increase in the number of shootings. There have been three so far this year, compared to one at this time in 2014.

None of the three shootings have been fatal, but all three gang related.

The most recent incident occurred Sunday, when a 24-year-old Hispanic man was walking out of a restaurant on 35th Ave between 95th Street and Junction Blvd, when two men approached him.

After words were exchanged the victim was shot once in the chest. His injuries are not life threatening, but the suspects still remain at large.

What about the 4 drug addicts that constantly hang out in the plaza and aggressively bother pedestrians? What is going to be done to properly patrol this area? It is a top 5 train station and there are never any cops around.
