Meet the Candidates for Public Advocate at Jackson Heights Community Forum

Jewish Center of Jackson Heights

Jan. 18, 2019 By Meghan Sackman

The community is invited to an open forum in Jackson Heights later this month to hear from the candidates who are vying to be Public Advocate–to fill the position that Letitia James vacated to become the state Attorney General.

The forum, which will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Jewish Center of Jackson Heights at 37-06 77th St., will provide each candidate with five minutes to speak, and be followed by a question and answer period.

Ten candidates have already confirmed their attendance, including Councilmembers Jumaane Williams and Rafael Espinal Jr;  former council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito; and Assemblymember Ron Kim.

The event is being billed as a meet the candidates night.

“This forum is an opportunity for our community to hear from the candidates directly in order to make an informed decision at the polls as to who is the best choice for the job,” said Shekar Krishnan, who is the leader of New Visions Democratic Club, a co-organizer. “We’re looking forward to a great and robust discussion.”

The event is being put together by the JFK Democratic Club, the Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club of Queens (LGDCQ), and New Visions Democratic Club—in collaboration with Councilmember Daniel Dromm.

Approximately 20 candidates have put their names forward to take over the role of public advocate, a position that includes investigating citywide complaints, presiding over City Council meetings, and being next in line of succession should something happen to the mayor.

The special election is scheduled take place on Feb. 26. The winner will serve for nine months and will then have to run again to secure a full four-year term.

Op-Ed | Hochul: Action is Imperative on Shoplifting, but Violent Crime is Just Fine

Negotiations regarding the New York State budget have just concluded a few days ago and a budget has passed after more than two weeks of delays. But while Gov. Kathy Hochul has proclaimed this year’s ‘bold agenda’ aims to make New York ‘safer,’ there hasn’t been so much as a whisper about the safety issue New Yorkers actually care about – New York States’s dangerous bail reform laws and the State’s absence of a ‘dangerousness standard,’ which would allow judges to detain without bail those defendants that pose a present a clear and present danger to our communities. (The 49 other states and the federal government have a dangerousness standard. NY State is the only state that lacks this essential protection from the State’s most dangerous offenders.)
