A 76-year-old man was struck by a stray bullet while he was asleep in a Corona nursing home Saturday night, according to police.

The victim was awoken by a sharp pain at around 11:15 p.m. while he was in his room at the Madison York Assisted Living facility, located at 112-14 Corona Ave. The man discovered that he was bleeding from the right side of his neck below his ear, according to police.

He alerted staff and was rushed to Northwell Hospital in Flushing where he was treated.

The man required stitches and was then returned back to the facility, according to police. The victim’s wife, while visiting him following the incident, noticed a hole in the curtain near his bed. She then discovered a coin-sized hole in the window that appeared to have been caused by a stray bullet.

The man was sent back to the hospital and a scan was conducted where it was determined that he had been hit by a bullet, according to police.

The man’s name has not been released and there have been no arrests.

The shooting comes at a time when there has been an increase in shootings across the city.

In the NYPD 110th Precinct—where Madison York Assisted Living is located—there were 12 shootings reported for the year through Nov. 29, 2020, up from five for the same period a year ago.
