The NFL football player who allegedly punched a police officer in Jackson Heights last month is now facing up to seven years in prison if convicted on his slew of charges, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.
Trevor Bates, a 25-year-old Detroit Lions linebacker who hails from Westbrook, Maine,was charged with assault, theft of services, resisting arrest and more after allegedly failing to pay a taxi fare and subsequently attacking an officer at the 115th Precinct station on Jan. 26.
Bates was arraigned via video conference on Feb. 5.
Bates was arrested on Jan. 26 after allegedly refusing to pay a $32 taxi fare to the Hampton Inn on Ditmars Boulevard, according to the DA’s office, and taken to the Northern Boulevard precinct house at around 1:30 a.m.
At the station, Bates was notified that as long as he didn’t have any outstanding warrants, he would receive a desk appearance ticket and be free to go.
Bates allegedly refused to be fingerprinted and “became increasingly agitated,” according to the DA’s office, before punching NYPD Sergeant James O’Brien, who “attempted to calm the defendant down.” Police also tased the linebacker during the incident.
O’Brien allegedly sustained a concussion and required three stitches over his left eye, the DA said.
Bates, who was reportedly taken to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, is due back in court on March 8.
Detroit Lions General Manager Bob Quinn released a statement following the arrest.
“We are aware of the arrest of Trevor Bates earlier today in New York. We have not spoken to Trevor as of yet and are still in the process of gathering more information. The Detroit Lions will have no further comment at this time.”
