The Parks Department announced today that East Elmhurst will be getting its first dog run.

The dog run, which will be built on Ditmars Blvd and 94th Street (by LaGuardia Airport), will cost $1.5 million. It will be the first open space in the neighborhood dedicated to canines.

Currently, residents travel three miles or more to dog friendly parks in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Jackson Heights and surrounding neighborhoods.

Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland said that her constituents have been asking for a dog run for some time and that it was requested during the 2015 Participatory Budgeting Process, although it did not get the votes.

“As a community of many dog lovers, we are…thrilled to have a proper place for our four legged friends to roam freely and live more active lifestyles.”

The Parks Department also announced that it will spend $1.7 million to upgrade Overlook Park, which will include new play equipment, benches, fences and sidewalk. Trees will be pruned or cleared and new greenery will be planted as well.

“This will give this area a viable recreation space and augment the quality of life of all,” said Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubrey, “It will also provide public recreation space for the children moving into the nearby family shelter (Clarion Hotel) . Both older residents and these new families will be well-served by the public spaces,” he added.

$1.5 million for a dog park?! I thought $1 million estimate for the Astoria dog run was insane! Someone connected to the Parks Department is making a ton of cash for very little work. This needs to be investigated!
