Queens Boulevard at 56th Avenue (Google Maps)

A 73-year-old Elmhurst woman is dead after being struck by an SUV on Monday morning while crossing Queens Boulevard.
Police say Yimei Gao was crossing Queens Boulevard from north to south at 56th Avenue when she was hit by the 38-year-old male driver of a 2017 Kia driving west on the boulevard at around 6:20 a.m.
Paramedics found the 73-year-old unconscious on the roadway with trauma about her body, and pronounced her dead at the scene.
The driver, according to police, remained on the scene.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

It’s a shame, I drove past a guy lighting a candle for her. May she Rest In Peace. Too many Americans are dying due to stupidity, impatience, and negligence from drivers. Not sure exactly how it went down but I hope it others can learn from this. I guess we should start calling Queens Boulevard the boulevard of Death again.
I watched a story on NY1 about this case and the NYPD collision investigators determined she crossed the street when she wasn’t supposed to. She crossed when the orange hand symbol was displayed. This is why the driver who stayed at the seen was not arrested or even charged with a crime. Many of these incidents are caused by drivers and many by the pedestrians. If everyone followed the rules many of these tragedies could be avoided. Rest in peace to this lady and condolences to her people.
I don’t know about everyone else, but whenever I’m coming home from work and want to cross Queens Blvd, it’s a challenge because even when the light is red, cars continue to pass the red light just so they can get closer to the next red light! Meanwhile, we pedestrians are always in a battle against the automobiles.
