A rookie police officer who saved the life of a toddler at the 115th Precinct station house in Jackson Heights July 30 received a proclamation at City Hall last week.

Osvaldo Nunez, who had only been on the force a few weeks, administered CPR on a toddler after the child’s mother ran up to him outside the 92-15 Northern Blvd. station house crying, “My daughter’s not breathing, my daughter’s not breathing!”

Nunez, who determined that the toddler, Leah, had no pulse, placed her on a stool and began performing CPR. Moments later, Leah opened her eyes and was later treated at Elmhurst Hospital.

“It was an absolute pleasure to applaud Police Officer Nunez for his act of heroism,” Council Member Daniel Dromm said. “Because of his quick thinking and immediate response, one of my youngest constituents is alive and well today.”

Dromm added that Nunez’ career is off to a great start and, “We are so proud to have him here, serving the people of Jackson Heights.”

Nunez described the experience as exhilarating. “I could never explain the feeling that ran through my body at that time,” Nunez said. “The happiness and look of relief on her mother’s face was priceless. This was the reason I always wanted to become a police officer.”
