Jackson Heights group hosts Family Day at Diversity Plaza Saturday

Mr. Met

Sept. 25, 2015 By Michael Florio

Calling all families.

Friends of Diversity Plaza, a Jackson Heights community group, along with elected officials and several local organizations, will be hosting the first annual Family Day at Diversity Plaza Saturday.

The event, which will include live performances and other entertainment, will be held at the plaza, which is on 37th Road between 73rd and 74th Streets. The festivities will start at 12 pm and will run to 4 pm.

The event came about after Councilman Daniel Dromm was looking to put together a family day for the community. At the same time Friends of Diversity Plaza were planning on hosting a music event at the plaza.

They decided to merge their respective plans, according to Eirik Davey-Gislason, a Friends of Diversity Plaza member and the event organizer.

“This was the brainchild of Councilman Dromm,” he said. “We decided to work together and create something even bigger.”

The day will kick off with a performance by Ajna Dance Company at 12 pm, followed by a performance by Deum Band at 12:30 pm and a NY Tibetan Service Center Performance at 1 pm.

Attendees can enjoy a zumba class at 1:30 pm and will have the opportunity to take photos with Mr. Met at 2:30.

Davey-Gislason expects more than 200 residents to attend the event.

“The Jackson Heights community is very close knit,” he said. “Word will spread and we think lots of families will show up.”

Children can enjoy face painting and a bounce house.

The National Dance Institute will round out the day at 3:30 pm.

Friends of Diversity Plaza hope to team up with Dromm next year and turn it into an annual event.

“We want this to be an inclusive event,” Davey-Gislason said. “We want everyone to feel comfortable here.”
