The owners of a popular Jackson Heights Himalayan restaurant have opened a second location on Northern Blvd.
Dawa Lhamo and Chime Tendha, owners of the highly-acclaimed Tibetan/Himalayan restaurant Phayul (located at 37-65 74th Street), opened Phayul Himalayan Restaurant at 89-17 Northern Blvd on Saturday.
The two restaurants offer the same menu, although there are some additional items at the Northern Blvd location, such as a variety of sushi rolls and noodles not offered at Phayul.
The couple decided to open the new location so they could serve more customers. Lhamo said customers come to eat at the 74th Street restaurant and often have to wait for a table.
“A lot of people come to eat there [Phayul] and it is very small,” she said.
Phayul only has five tables and can seat up to 20 people, Lhamo said. The new restaurant is more spacious and can seat up to 40 people.
The Northern Blvd location has a larger kitchen, which has allowed Tendha, who is also the head chef, to add more items to the menu.
Lhamo said they were also drawn to the location since they live just two blocks away, and have noticed that there is a need for a Tibetan and Himalayan restaurant near where they live.
“There is no Tibetan food over here,” Lhamo said.
Lhamo said customers have slowly been trickling in to the new restaurant, but she is hopeful that business will pick up once the word that Phayul has opened a second location gets out.
“I just hope the neighborhood likes it,” she said. “All the food is very fresh and prepared after it is ordered.”
The location was formerly Ru Yi Northern Restaurant.
Phayul Himalayan Restaurant is open from 11 am to 11 pm, seven days a week.
