A 47-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a car on Northern Boulevard just after midnight this morning.
Carlos Gavilanes, who was just steps from his 101st Street home, was crossing Northern Boulevard from south to north between 100th Street and 101st Street when he was struck by a 2003 Honda civic at around 12:37 a.m.
The driver, a 24-year-old woman, had been traveling west in the left travel lane, police said.
It is unknown whether Gavilanes was in the crosswalk or in the middle of the road, a police spokesperson said.
Emergency responders transported Gavilanes to Elmhurst General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver remained on the scene after the crash and was uninjured. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
The accident took place exactly three weeks after 9-year-old Giovanni Ampuero was hit by a car and killed on Northern Boulevard near 70th Street.
The Department of Transportation installed leading pedestrian intervals along the road after the April 30 crash, although those are located between 58th Street and Junction Boulevard and not within the range of the crash that killed Gavilanes this morning.
The DOT has said that it intends to install other safety measures along the road, including “qwick kurb” rubber post devices, which channel traffic. These measures will also be located between 58th Street and Junction Boulevard.

Bully tactics by electeds decided the fixes only go through one district. Safe streets for all, not just those who make backroom deals. Northern needs a comprehensive plan with speed cameras, bus lane, planted medians, enforcement and education outreach to its 13,000 school kids and their caregivers. Also article neglects to mention senior cities fatalities at 85th and 90th this year alone!!!!

I agree that sometimes it’s the pedestrians that are not paying attention but the cars has to slow down or stop
Some cars speed up when they see the yellow light , NYPD has to more proactive, too many speeders during rush hour & late a night there are drag racers.
NYPD and DOT has to do something.
Some of the lights to cross Northern give pedestrians a whooping 10 seconds to cross northern. Who DECIDED that? Who decided to make lights for pedestrians so short their lives are put a risk every day. You think a elderly person can cross Northern in 10 seconds??? THINK AGAIN! Fix the timers and give pedestrians REAL time to cross.
call your counsel person about this and then he has to get in touch with the DOT ASAP
Is ridiculous! Queens Blvd is another one! pedestrians have 20 seconds to cross when Queens blvd is like 2 blocks long put together .
Something that might help is if jaywalking laws were somewhat enforced because it can’t always be the drivers fault
