FDNY: House Fires Break Out in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, Critical Injuries Reported

Two large house fires broke out in Queens last night with one erupting in Jackson Heights and the other in Elmhurst.

The first blaze swept through a 3-story house on 71st Street near 31st Avenue shortly after midnight, according to the FDNY. Sixty firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames.

The fire broke out in a second floor bedroom of the 30-46 71st Street house, according to the FDNY.

Two young girls, 6 and 8, were pulled to safety by firefighters and were taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical by stable condition.

The Daily News reported there was also a 12-year-old boy who had to jump from the building to a mattress to escape the flames.

The blaze was brought under control by 12:35 a.m. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Just hours later, at 5:12 a.m., firefighters responded to a call that a two-story house at 40-46 Case Street in Elmhurst was in flames.

About 100 firefighters arrived on the scene and brought it under control by 7:28 a.m.

Seven firefighters suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries. Three civilians were also hurt, including one critically.

The cause of both fires is still under investigation.

Man sought for allegedly groping a subway rider while she waited on a platform in Elmhurst: NYPD

Police from the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills and Transit District 20 are looking for a man, who is built like an NFL player, for allegedly groping a 50-year-old woman as she waited for the subway near the Queens Center Mall in Elmhurst on Monday morning.

The victim was standing on the southbound M/R platform at the 59th Avenue subway station on the Queens Boulevard line when a stranger approached her and touched her left buttocks, police said. The brute fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. The woman was not injured during the incident.
