Jackson Heights Pizzeria Will Participate in HIV/AIDS Fundraiser

A Jackson Heights pizza joint will be taking part in an international fundraiser for HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention and treatment.

Sac’s Place at 86-14A 37th Avenue will be one of 3,000 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada— and six restaurants in New York City— to take part in this year’s Dining Out for Life fundraiser on April 26. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their sales that day to organizations that provide HIV/AIDs services.

Funds raised in New York will go to the Alliance for Positive Change, a nonprofit which provides services to New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. 

North American restaurants have taken part in Dining Out For Life since it was started in Philadelphia in 1991, but this will be the first year city restaurants participate. The fundraiser typically collects $4 million for HIV/AIDS each year.

Sac’s has agreed to donate 25 percent of its sales on April 26 to the Alliance, said Ebony Ross, the organization’s director of development and planning.

Ross said that donations collected through Dining Out For Life will go towards the Alliance’s various programs, including HIV/AIDS testing and services for the homeless.

Although there have been great strides in terms of HIV/AIDS treatment and awareness, said Ross, the disease continues to take lives in New York City. About 6,127 New Yorkers died from HIV and AIDS in 2016.

“In my opinion, we’re not all infected— but we’re all affected,” said Ross.
