600 ConEd customers in Jackson Heights without power last night

Nearly 600 ConEd customers in Jackson Heights were without power last night.

Residents on 75th Street between 35th Ave and 37th Ave were without electricity for nearly four hours, according to ConEd spokesman, Sidney Alvarez.

The power went out at 6:21 pm and was restored at 10 pm, Alvarez said. Power is now fully restored.

Equipment malfunctions lead to the outage, most likely connected to the hot weather. Alvarez said the constant use of electricity, often generated by air conditioners on hot days, can put an extra strain on the network, causing it to go out.

However, he added that while the four hours last night were likely a big inconvenience to customers, the network was up and running relatively quickly.

“Sometimes outages can last for hours or days,” he said.

ConEd offers energy conservation tips, such as running a washing machine or dishwasher in the morning or evening hours, rather than in the afternoon when temperatures are highest.

Two thieves were caught on camera stealing an ATM at an East Elmhurst convenience store just before Christmas.

The NYPD says the two perpetrators belong to a three-man crew that has broken into 49 commercial establishments across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx in the last four months of 2024. In each incident, two of the crooks haul away ATM machines before speeding away from each crime scene in stolen vehicles driven by a getaway driver.
