A pedestrian is in critical condition after a taxi backed into him at a Jackson Heights crosswalk this morning, according to the NYPD.

The man was crossing 74th Street, at the intersection with 37th Ave, when a yellow-cab driver who was in reverse struck him at about 1:10 am, police said.

The 2013 Ford taxi stopped at a red light just past the pedestrian crosswalk. The driver attempted to reverse out of the crosswalk when he struck a 55 year-old-man from Staten Island.

The victim was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital with life threatening injuries, police said. The police did not have an update on his condition.

The driver remained on the scene and has not been arrested, police said.

Thieves caught on camera stealing ATM from East Elmhurst store, one of nearly 50 heists by same crew: NYPD

Two thieves were caught on camera stealing an ATM at an East Elmhurst convenience store just before Christmas.

The NYPD says the two perpetrators belong to a three-man crew that has broken into 49 commercial establishments across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx in the last four months of 2024. In each incident, two of the crooks haul away ATM machines before speeding away from each crime scene in stolen vehicles driven by a getaway driver.
