Drivers Who Get Caught Speeding Through School Zones Twice Would Face Suspended License Under New Bill

Jan. 24, 2018 By Tara Law

Drivers caught speeding through school zones twice within 18 months may soon have their licenses suspended.

A bill passed unanimously in the State Senate Monday that would suspend the driver’s license of motorists who get caught speeding twice in school zones over 18 months for 60 days.

The bill was sponsored by State Senator Jose Peralta, and will likely be introduced in the State Assembly by Deborah Glick of Manhattan in coming months.

Currently, drivers caught speeding in a school zone a second time are slapped with an increased fine.

“A suspended driver’s license sends an even stronger message that drivers need to slow down,” Peralta said. “This is about changing behavior..and should be a real awakening.”

Third time offenders, as the law stands, have their license revoked. This will remain the same.

Peralta said that the legislation is similar to the law that protects workers in construction zones. Drivers who are caught speeding in work zones twice within 18 months temporarily lose their license.

The bill was passed in the State Senate in March 2017, but it was not voted on in the State Assembly that year.

As legislation must be passed in both the Assembly and the Senate during the same legislative session, it has to be passed in both chambers again this year.
