Jackson Hardware, which has operated in Jackson Heights for more than four decades, will close at the end of the year.
The family-owned store, located at 85-11 Roosevelt Ave, has been the go-to place to get keys cut, painting supplies and more since 1975,
A store employee, who declined to give his name, said that the business’s lease is set to expire, and that the new rent for the next five years would have been “a lot more.”
The owner of the store plans to retire after its closing, the employee said.

Literally was in Jackson Heights today.
The orginials of this community is a dying breed. Sad to hear ! I grew up in the heights and loved it. However I do hope he can enjoy the fruit of his Labour and enjoy retirement.

Terrible loss to the community. The owner is the last of a breed of hardware specialist that really knows his business. As a local tradesman that has 50 years experience in construction I can speak with authority. He is always helpful and congenial when you needed help with any type of purchase. The prices and availability of products were always great. I can say with absolute certainty that there are few stores of this type left anymore. Long time residents can remember all the great stores that have closed in Jackson Heights these past fifty years and they can add JH Hardware to this list. Now that Target is opening up on the site of the JH movie theater it is obvious that small business owners will have a harder time paying the increasing rents that landlords are asking.
They were always so helpful to me on guiding me on projects , suggesting solutions for problems , they even fixed baby carriage wheel at no charge ! Good luck to all , you will be missed.
Sad to see this hardware store close, as they have always offered excellent customer service. Best wishes to all.
