Local officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking today to mark the beginning of construction of a new school building at P.S. 143 in Corona, which will bring nearly 1,000 permanent seats to the school and replace decades-old classroom trailers.
The new five story addition to the 34-74 113 Street school is slated to open in September 2020, with 22 new classrooms for grades 1 through 5, 11 new Kindergarten classrooms, six special education rooms, science labs and more.
The building is expected to alleviate the overcrowding problem at PS 143, which was built to serve 900 students yet has catered to 1,800 children in recent years.
Many students have been educated in classroom trailers and a mini building over the years, which have recently been removed to make way for the new building. While construction takes place, existing students are finding space in the main school building as well as the PS 143 Annex 2, which is located at 86-37 53rd Ave.
“This is a magnificent victory for the parents, for the students, for the community and for all of us,” said State Sen. Jose Peralta. “The new permanent addition to P.S. 143 will help us fight overcrowding and ensure children don’t have to learn in a rusty trailer.”
PTA President Angelica Salgado said that the groundbreaking represented a new beginning for the school. “After almost 30 years, no more trailers.”
