Musical block party to take place at Travers Park Saturday

Oct. 6, 2017 By Tara Law

Funk musician Bootsy Collins will host a musical block party in Jackson Heights tomorrow.

The event, known as the John Lennon Educational Bus Tour Block Party, will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Travers Park. The event will feature live music, celebrity appearances, giveaways, free food and tours of the John Lennon bus.

The John Lennon Tour Bus is a mobile recording and production studio run by a nonprofit. The organization is dedicated to bringing music and technological education to schools, education, music and technology conferences across the country.

Collins is participating in a month-long residency with the John Lennon Bus, during which he is visiting schools, festivals and events throughout the city.

During the block party, Collins will be the judge for a “funk off,” during which amateur and professional musicians will face off on bass guitar. The winner will receive a bass signed by Collins. Collins is famous for performing on a custom star-shaped bass guitar known as a “space bass.”

The giveaways will include Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones, Yamaha Pacifica electric guitars, Yamaha PSRE253 keyboards and SKD2 survival kits, Line 6 AmpliFi75 amplifiers, OWC On-The-Go Pro 1 TB hard drives, Neutrik Custom cable and connectors, and copies of Propellerhead Reason.

The event is being sponsored by the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Council Member Daniel Dromm and Council Member Julissa Ferreras-Copeland.

Man sought for allegedly groping a subway rider while she waited on a platform in Elmhurst: NYPD

Police from the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills and Transit District 20 are looking for a man, who is built like an NFL player, for allegedly groping a 50-year-old woman as she waited for the subway near the Queens Center Mall in Elmhurst on Monday morning.

The victim was standing on the southbound M/R platform at the 59th Avenue subway station on the Queens Boulevard line when a stranger approached her and touched her left buttocks, police said. The brute fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. The woman was not injured during the incident.
