East Elmhurst canine owners call for a dog run, set sights on LaGuardia Landing Lights Park

Dog run proposal

June 19, 2017 By Jason Cohen

Dog owners in East Elmhurst are banding together to see if they can get a dog run in their neighborhood and spoke at the Community Board 3 monthly meeting Thursday about their quest.

Many canine owners are currently taking their dogs to LaGuardia Landing Lights Park, which consists of several lots near the airport, stretching from 78th St. and 25th Ave. to the Grand Central Parkway.

While the owners are allowed to let their dogs run off-leash after 9 pm on Lot A (located at 25th Ave. between. 78th St. and 79th Streets), they face the possibility of being fined for doing so during the daylight hours. The lot is also small and surrounded by houses. Many neighboring homeowners call 311 about the noise.

Given the problems, more than 100 local dog owners recently formed the Friends of LaGuardia Landing, a group of people who want a designated dog run in the neighborhood. The group’s goal is to have a dog run at Lot H at 82nd and Astoria Blvd.

Lot H, however, is not fenced so dog owners are reluctant to use it at present. They are using Lot A because it is currently fenced off.

“There’s a huge dog population in our neighborhood,” Kate Bly, a member of the group said at the Community Board 3 meeting Thursday night. “In an urban setting, dogs need space to run and be social with people and other dogs.”

The group has created a website, landinglightsdogrun.org, and has started a petition calling for a dog run at Lot H, which has close to 400 signatures so far. For information, contact info@landinglightsdogrun.org or call 347- 674-5768.
