A Whitestone resident who ran a cocaine trafficking scheme through his Corona restaurant was sentenced to 18 years in prison this week.

Gregorio Gigliotti, 61, was convicted after a two week trial in July and sentenced for smuggling more than 50 kilograms of cocaine in to the country from Costa Rica in produce shipments.

According to the charges, law enforcement officials intercepted and seized about 55 kilograms of cocaine that had been hidden in boxes of cassava and shipped to Gigliotti’s Corona-based Italian restaurant, Cucino Amodo Mio at 51-01 108th Street.

Gigliotti was arrested on March 11, 2015, and when police executed a search warrant for the restaurant they found seven guns, various gun paraphernalia, a handwritten ledger showing the movement of more than $350,000, and $100,000 in cash.

Gigliotti’s wife and son were also arrested in connection with the scheme and are awaiting sentencing after both plead guilty to various charges. His son Angelo Gigliotti faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison and his wife Eleonora Gigliotti faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison.
