Fire breaks out at Elmhurst apartment building, 112 apartments evacuated and 10 firefighters injured

A fire erupted inside a seven-story apartment building in Elmhurst last night that led to the evacuation of 112 apartments and 10 firefighters being injured.

The fire broke out in the cockloft of the roof at the 56-11 94th Street apartment building and the fire department was called at 6:25 p.m.

By 7:08 p.m. the fire had become a five-alarm fire, and it took more than 200 firefighters to get the blaze under control by about 10:30 p.m.

Ten firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. Six were sent to Elmhurst Hospital with minor injuries, three were sent to Elmhurst Hospital in serious but stable condition, and one was sent to Weill Cornell Hospital in serious but stable condition. The fire damaged all 112 apartments, according to the FDNY.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said a spokesperson for the FDNY.
