Man pleads guilty to rash of burglaries in Elmhurst, DA says

Feb. 15, 2017 Staff Report

A Queens man pleaded guilty yesterday to committing a spree of residential break-ins throughout Elmhurst and Flushing at the end of last year.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced this morning that 54-year-old Maspeth resident Juan Cuervo pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary after breaking in to nine separate residences over the last few months of last year.

“In pleading guilty, the defendant has admitted to brazenly breaking into several homes across a wide swath in Queens County. The defendant not only invaded the victim’s personal and private spaces, but he ransacked their homes and stole their possessions.  The defendant will be incarcerated for his actions,” Brown said.

According to the charges, Cuervo broke in to nine separate residences throughout Elmhurst between September 15 and December 7 of last year, and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, a camera, silver coins and cash.

He was caught trying to burglarize 53-08 80th Street in December, when police observed him entering the house and leaving with a messenger bag before he was arrested.

Cuervo will officially be sentenced at a hearing on March 17, where he will face nine years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
