President-elect Donald Trump’s pick of Betsy DeVos as the Education Secretary has drawn heavy criticism from local councilman Danny Dromm.

Dromm, who is the City Council Education Committee Chairperson, claims that DeVos has a background of undermining public schools and is unsuitable for the position.

“Betsy DeVos is a frightening and unqualified choice for Education Secretary,” Dromm said in a statement.

DeVos has advocated providing taxpayer money in the form of vouchers to help families pay for private and parochial schools; pressed to expand publicly funded but privately run charter schools; and tried to reduced the influence of teacher unions.

“Her support for extremist policies like vouchers makes her a dangerous person to lead the Department of Education seeking to undermine public schools,” Dromm, a former New York City public school teacher, said.

“President-elect Trump has just given us another reason to fight his terrible agenda to corporatize our public schools.  I call on Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to block her nomination.”
