Since Donald Trump was elected as president on Tuesday night, there has been a feeling of divisiveness throughout the country, but many community members are taking it as an opportunity to bring the community together and embrace diversity.

Several Jackson Heights residents are organizing a “Diversity Trumps Hate” gathering at Diversity Plaza beginning at 5 p.m. tomorrow evening, aiming to bring members of the community together to support one another.

Organizer Jake Feldman said the event stemmed from a text conversation with several friends.

“Following the results of Tuesday, we wanted to figure out how to feel more engaged and active in what was going on,” he said. “And when we were talking about it, the thing that resonated the most for us was that Jackson Heights is the most diverse zip code in the country, and it has established such a harmony and community that manages to live, work, socialize, and just exist side by side.”

Though Feldman said that he and the other organizers are still working to nail down the details of the event, he said that several community leaders including Councilman Danny Dromm would speak, and then it would open up to members of the community that wanted to talk.

He said that he hopes people will share a reading or song from their own traditions and cultures, to show the diversity and inclusiveness of the neighborhood.

“We wanted to communicate to our kids that despite the fear and unrest right now, everything will be okay because our community is strong and we believe America is stronger and better than that,” Feldman said.

He said that he expects the event to run for several hours, and due to the central location, expects hundreds of people to at least stop by.

“The stakes are very high these days and the thing that we want to make sure we communicate to everybody is that no matter the outcome, we want to stand together as a community and support each other and not fear that things will take a downturn in terms of freedoms, liberties, rights, or safety and inclusion in our community,” Feldman said.

“We will do everything in our power to staunchly repudiate any message of non-inclusiveness,” he added.

I think these posts are all by the same sad angry person. Hope that you have a better year next year and get some compassion while you lose that unattractive talk. The Plaza needs work but it sounds like you could use some improvements of a personal nature.
