A former NBA player will attend a kids’ basketball tournament in LeFrak City this Saturday.

The first ever LeFrak City Legendary Basketball Day will take place on Saturday at 1 pm at the John F. Kennedy Jr. School, located at 57-12 94th Street.

The event is being hosted by the LeFrak City Tenants Association.

Former NBA player and LeFrak City Legend Kenny Anderson will be in attendance.

Anderson, a LeFrak City native, played basketball at Archbishop Molloy High School before going on to play college ball at Georgia Tech. He was the second overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft, by the New Jersey Nets.

He went onto play until 2005, playing for the Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, New Orleans Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Haws and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Local children between the ages of eight and 16 will be able to compete in the tournament. There will be at least two games played and children interested are encouraged to attend Saturday, according to Malikah Khadijah Shabazz, head of the LeFrak City Tenants Association.

All participants will receive a free T-shirt and a signed Kenny Anderson water bottle. Competitors also have the opportunity to win a glass-encased basketball signed by Anderson.

Games will begin at 2 pm. The event will end at 6 pm. It is free for all to attend.

The organization decided to host this event as a way to give back to the community. They aim to make it an annual event.

“We wanted to bring some joy to the kids in the community,” Shabazz said. “We also get to showcase a community legend.”
