A Mexican song and dance concert will be returning to Travers Park for a sixth year.
Students from the Calpulli Mexican Dance Company will perform in Travers Park this Sunday at 3 pm. The event is free.
The students, who are largely between the ages of five and 18, will perform songs and folk dance from central Mexico, according to Juan Castano, Managing Director with the company.
“Calpulli Mexican Dance Company is based in Queens, specifically Jackson Heights and East Elmhurst, and we love performing for our home community,” Castano said.
The concert will also have an adult performance.
This is the sixth year Calpulli has hosted the event in Travers Park. They started doing so after the Jackson Heights Beautification Group invited them to perform.
The event continues to grow every year.
Castano said when they started six years ago they had about 50 students. That number has grown to about 120, he said.
Last year the event drew about 200 people to the park. However, with even more students this year, Castano expects to bigger number Sunday.
He recommends that attendees bring their own chairs and umbrellas.
