Jackson Heights residents helped raise thousands of dollars for victims of the massive Ecuador earthquake.

The “Queens for Ecuador” benefit concert, held Sunday night at La Boom New York, raised more than $10,000 for the victims of the April 16 earthquake.

All the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF, one of the international organizations working directly with the Consulate General of Ecuador in New York. The Hispanic Federation will deposit the proceeds into UNICEF’s account.

The massive quake killed at least 655 people and injured more than 16,600 others. Forty-eight people are still missing and more than 25,000 were left homeless.

In addition, according to UNICEF, more than 150,000 schoolchildren were displaced as 281 schools were destroyed or damaged. The natural disaster is one of the worst in Ecuador’s history. Ecuadorian authorities have estimated that the quake caused at least $3 billion in damages.

State Sen. Jose Peralta, along with Assembly Members Francisco Moya and Michael DenDekker, and U.S. Reps Joseph Crowley and Grace Meng, organized the concert.

Peralta is encouraging residents to continue to donate to UNICEF.

“Ecuador is devastated, and we all must come together and aid those affected by this tragedy,” Peralta who represents more than 46,000 Ecuadorians in his district, said. “We stand with Ecuador and its people as they recover from this natural disaster.”
