Parks Dept. looking to add gates to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to stop late-night partying

Flushing MeadowJune 16, 2015 By Michael Florio

The city is looking to install gates at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to prevent residents from entering the park late at night.

The move is part of an effort by the Parks Department and the NYPD to improve park safety, according to a Parks Dept. spokeswoman.

The gates would help combat the longtime issue of people entering the park afterhours and causing a disturbance.

One night last month the police issued 38 summonses after receiving numerous complaints about loud music and partying. The majority of the offenders were issued summonses for being in the park after hours.

The Parks Dept. took steps to improve safety in April, when it installed speed bumps to the entrance of the Boathouse and Marina West parking lots.

The aim was to prevent speeding and reckless driving, including drifting, a technique where a driver briefly over steers at the start of a turn, causing the rear of the vehicle to skid.

“As always, safety is our first priority — we have already installed speed bumps at the entrance to the boathouse lot to deter reckless driving, and are exploring the feasibility of purchasing and installing gates as well as other options,” Lewandowski added in the statement.
