Movie Screenings to take place at Diversity Plaza every Wednesday

Diversity Plaza will be transformed into a makeshift movie theater every Wednesday starting March 30.

Jeff Orlick, a member of Friends of Diversity Plaza, has set up a projector and speakers and will be screening films at 8:15 pm every Wednesday on the wall next to Delhi Heights (37-66 74th Street).

Orlick said that the plaza is a great venue for events like this.

“This is such an awesome space, with so much potential, but it is underutilized,” he said. “There should be events like this held regularly.”

Orlick is organizing these Wednesday movie nights on his own. He is not teaming up with community groups or elected officials.

He aims to screen movies that people can enjoy regardless of the language they speak.

“The films I screen will not be dependent on language,” he said. “You won’t have to know a specific language to understand them.”

He plans on screening silent films, including those featuring silent-film-star Buster Keaton.

Some films are set to classical music, such as Fantasia the Disney movie. He is also open to suggestions from the public.

“I want to bring the community together and all have a good time,” he said.

Orlick said he had a “test run” last week that went well.

“It looked and sounded great,” he said. “Some people stopped to watch.”

He said he will be bringing a tarp, and he encourages people to bring a blanket and/or chairs.

“The plaza has some chairs, but not nearly enough,” he said.

Op-Ed | Hochul: Action is Imperative on Shoplifting, but Violent Crime is Just Fine

Apr. 29, 2024 By Council Member James F. Gennaro

Negotiations regarding the New York State budget have just concluded a few days ago and a budget has passed after more than two weeks of delays. But while Gov. Kathy Hochul has proclaimed this year’s ‘bold agenda’ aims to make New York ‘safer,’ there hasn’t been so much as a whisper about the safety issue New Yorkers actually care about – New York States’s dangerous bail reform laws and the State’s absence of a ‘dangerousness standard,’ which would allow judges to detain without bail those defendants that pose a present a clear and present danger to our communities. (The 49 other states and the federal government have a dangerousness standard. NY State is the only state that lacks this essential protection from the State’s most dangerous offenders.)
