The Corona man who was arrested in January for following a 10-year-old girl along 81st Street faces up to a year in prison.

On Jan. 29, Jaminton Carela, 29, called a 10-year-old on 81st Street and told her to come with him, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown’s office.

When the girl ignored him, Carela crossed the street and followed her along 81st Street and reached his hand out to her and tried to grab her arm.

The girl ran from Carela and yelled for help. A nearby school crossing guard responded and confronted him at 37th Avenue, causing him to flee the location.

Carela was arrested and identified himself on a police surveillance video, according to the District Attorney’s criminal complaint.

He is being charged with endangering the welfare of a child and two charges of harassment in the second degree. He faces up to a year in prison, according to the District Attorney’s office.

At a student safety town hall last night, State Sen. Jose Peralta elaborated that he faces a year in prison or three years probation, as well as a maximum fine of $1,000.

Peralta said that punishment “seems light.”

However, he added, “the Queens D.A. will make sure that the individual will get the maximum penalty by law.”

Carela has five prior arrests, which will work against him, according to Peralta.

“He has a slew of charges including criminal mischief, grand larceny, disorderly conduct and offenses related to theft,” Peralta said. “That doesn’t help him.”

The suspect is due in court again on April 5, according to Peralta.
