Jan. 4, 2022 By Allie Griffin

Police are looking for a man who allegedly took $2,500 from a woman’s backpack in Jackson Heights on Christmas Eve.

The apparent pickpocket was caught on video surveillance closely trailing the 28-year-old woman as she walked near the Jackson Heights- Elmhurst border by 82nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue, police said.

The suspect then allegedly unzipped the woman’s backpack and removed an envelope containing $2,500 cash from inside, according to police.

The woman didn’t realize the money was stolen until she later noticed that her backpack was open and the envelope was missing.

Police investigators subsequently unearthed surveillance footage showing the theft in progress.

The NYPD released a photo of the suspect. The suspect is described as being a man with a light complexion who was last seen wearing a dark cap, black jacket and blue jeans.

Anyone with information in regard to the incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
