Police are looking for a man who impersonated a police officer in order to carry out a robbery in Elmhurst last month.

The suspect, who was in a dark-colored Hyundai Sonata, allegedly pulled up alongside a female driver who was stopped at a red light on 59th Avenue on Sept. 29 at around 11:35 a.m., according to police.

The alleged impersonator displayed a shield and ordered the 37-year-old woman to pull her vehicle over into a nearby parking lot in the vicinity of 92-10 59th Ave., police said.

After the woman complied, the perpetrator identified himself as a police officer and threatened to issue her with a ticket if she didn’t hand over money, police said.

The victim then gave the suspect around $360 cash before he fled the scene in the sedan.

The suspect is described as light-skinned, between 45 to 55 years old. He was last seen wearing a multi-colored shirt, dark-colored shorts and a baseball cap.

Police released video footage of the suspect.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at https://crimestoppers.nypdonline.org/ or on Twitter @NYPDTips.
