Transgender community to hold rally tonight, in response to brutal attack

Elmhurst

Dec. 1, 2015 By Laura A Shepard

In response to a brutal attack of a transgender woman Sunday, a group called “Everything Transgender in NYC” is organizing a rally tonight.

The rally will begin at the 90th Street in Elmhurst, under the 7 train at 5:30 p.m. and move to 93rd Street and 97th Place at 6 p.m.

“Last night a transgender woman was beaten in Queens,” the organizer states on Facebook. “She is currently at Elmhurst hospital with brain damage. We will not sit around while transgender people keep getting beaten and murdered.”

Around 4 a.m. Sunday morning, a drunk man slammed the victim’s head against the sidewalk and fled the scene. The police have not arrested any suspects.

“We are asking transgender people, LGB people and all our supports to come out tonight,” the group wrote. “This last minute notice serves as a testament as to the support we have for one another in our community.”

The group is asking for support as well as sensitivity in the aftermath of the crime.

“We want to make sure that people understand that she’s not a man dressed in women’s clothing. She’s a woman,” Jennifer Louise Lopez, the executive director of Everything Transgender in NYC said.

Some news outlets referred to the victim, a 35-year old transgender woman named Louisa Perez as a man, angering members of the transgender community.

“The reason why is because when you’re doing that, you’re outing someone and when you do that, you put them in danger,” Lopez explained.
