Nov. 24, 2015 Staff Report

Two alleged drug smugglers busted with 20 kilograms of cocaine face up to 20 years in prison if they are convicted, according to the District Attorney’s office.

Nolvia Lili Amador Manueles and Monica Lucia Venegas Grimaldo have been charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy for allegedly transporting 20 kilograms of cocaine from Texas to New York.

The women were stopped in Brooklyn, near Boerum Place and Atlantic Avenue, driving a U-Haul with Arizona license plates around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Police believed the women were part of a Queens-based organized drug operation and brought them to the 115th Precinct in Jackson Heights.

The drugs were found later that day in two black speakers in the storage compartment of the U-Haul truck. The cocaine’s street value is about $4.2 million.

The defendants are awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

“The arrests of these two defendants is the result of a long-term investigation,” District Attorney Richard Brown said. “Let drug dealers be forewarned – this is not the place to import or distribute illegal drugs.”
