An inaugural chess tournament for public school students will take place in East Elmhurst this weekend

Council Member Francisco Moya, who represents East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, LeFrak City and his native Corona, announced earlier this week that P.S. 329Q will play host to its first ever chess tournament on Saturday.

The tournament will bring together about 200 students – from kindergarten to eighth grade – to compete in the chess tournament from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school, located at 26-25 97th St.

The tournament will have sections for both ranked and unranked players. An award ceremony will take place after the matches.

Moya will co-host the tournament alongside Chess in the Schools, a non-profit organization that seeks to foster social development among low-income students through chess.

The council member allocated funding for the 2020 fiscal year to Chess in the Schools, he said.
