Woman Fatally Struck by Van on Roosevelt Avenue: NYPD

A 49-year-old Woodside woman was fatally struck in the crosswalk while crossing Roosevelt Avenue Friday morning.

The victim, Choekyi Norzon of 68th Street, was hit by a 2002 Ford van at the intersection of 65th Street and Roosevelt Avenue at around 8:45 a.m., according to a NYPD spokesperson.

She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and pronounced dead.

Police said that the driver, a 70-year-old man, was heading south on 65th street when he struck Norzon in the crosswalk while attempting to make a left turn onto Roosevelt Avenue.

The driver remained on the scene and was not arrested. Police determined no criminality at the time of the incident, according to the spokesperson.

The investigation is ongoing.

The problem with this intersection is that the idiots that drive through here don’t respect the stop signs. The signs are in plain sight but decide they’re more important than respecting the right of way. They should definitely have police presence around this area to catch the people who violate the rules.

This is definitely a terrible intersection. Every time I drive that way, I always regret it and say to self, “Self, from now on take a different approach”…

Surely the cyclists are to blame!

I can say that as a pedestrian and Cyclist in tune with the traffic laws in Midtown And Queens that 90 % CYCLISTS Don’t play by the rules and don’t follow the same laws that apply to moving vehicles,I walk in the bike lanes now to avoid the sidewalk bike traffic.

A Queens grand jury indicted an East Elmhurst man in connection to a July 4th fatal collision at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Yersson Diaz, 27, of Ericsson Street just south of LaGuardia Airport, appeared at Queens Criminal Court for a summons on Tuesday and was taken into custody, according to an NYPD spokeswoman. He was booked Tuesday afternoon at the 110th Precinct in Elmhurst, where he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
