Oct. 29, 2019 By Allie Griffin

Two apartments in a newly-constructed North Corona building are now on offer through the city’s affordable housing lottery.

Two one-bedrooms units will be awarded to lottery winners for $1,700 a month in a new building at 105-05 Northern Blvd.

Applications for the units are open to households of one to three people who make between $58,286 and $115,320 combined annually. A full breakdown of the income requirements for each household size is below.

In addition to the monthly rent, tenants are responsible for electricity and gas bills which cover cooking, heat and hot water.

Nearby transportation options include the Q23, Q48 and Q66 buses.

The deadline to apply to the lottery is Nov. 19. Those eligible can apply online here.

While the units are given out to eligible applicants through a lottery, some preference is given to applicants with vision, mobility and hearing disabilities.

The only way this is affordable if you would consider how much rent may increase over the next five to ten years, but if you do not plan on staying in a one bedroom for that long, this is far from affordable.

$1700-$1800 can afford you a one bedroom in other more convenient neighborhoods in Queens, and you would at the most have to pay for electricity and cooking gas. Why are heat and hot water even mentioned? Concerned about how poorly this building was designed. Check on Streeteasy for better options.

Is this for real? 1700 + paying your own heat. Which will be about $200 a month. For a one bedroom that three people have to share? Is there a pool at least in the building? How is this affordable housing.

Negotiations regarding the New York State budget have just concluded a few days ago and a budget has passed after more than two weeks of delays. But while Gov. Kathy Hochul has proclaimed this year’s ‘bold agenda’ aims to make New York ‘safer,’ there hasn’t been so much as a whisper about the safety issue New Yorkers actually care about – New York States’s dangerous bail reform laws and the State’s absence of a ‘dangerousness standard,’ which would allow judges to detain without bail those defendants that pose a present a clear and present danger to our communities. (The 49 other states and the federal government have a dangerousness standard. NY State is the only state that lacks this essential protection from the State’s most dangerous offenders.)
