Local officials took part in a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday as work begins on the overhaul of the seating area at One Room Schoolhouse Park, a historic greenspace located on the border of East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.
Council Member Costa Constantinides was joined by NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Michael Dockett and Community Board 3 District Manager Giovanna Reid to break ground at the 90th Street/Astoria Boulevard site.
Improvements to the park’s seating area have been in the works since 2015 when Constantinides allocated $400,000 for the revamp.
NYC Parks expects the redevelopment to be completed by winter this year.
The Council Member said in a statement that the park was a valuable community asset and that its renovation would allow more local residents to enjoy it.
“One Room Schoolhouse Park is a treasured, historic site in western Queens that for generations has served as a refuge from the stresses of our daily lives,” said Constantinides.
Dockett said that the park was a jewel in the neighborhood and that it was a “green oasis” within Jackson Heights. He said that the reconstruction will make the park an even better public amenity.
“The renovation of the seating area will make this park an even more attractive and patriotic space for passive recreation in this community,” Dockett said.
The park was constructed in 1934 after the last one-room schoolhouse in Queens was demolished at the site. The park was officially named One Room Schoolhouse Park in 1996 to reflect the site’s history.

Uh yea it’s also their money as well everyone can use the park what’s this got to do with socialism . I don’t think you know what that word means . Maybe you should go use the park and relax
using taxpayer money to please the soshulists.
