Residents complain about noisy Northern Blvd bars at police precinct meeting

Residents who are fed up with noisy bars along Northern Boulevard brought their grievances to the 115^th Precinct this month.

Several complained about bars on Northern Boulevard between 82^nd Street and 86^th Street at the precinct’s community council meeting last Tuesday. This issue was brought up at the September meeting as well.

Deputy Inspector Brian Hennessy of the 115 Precinct told those in attendance that five bars along that strip received summonses for noise complaints. He was unable to specify which bars exactly received summonses.

One resident spoke specifically about bars located on Northern Boulevard between 84^th and 85^th Streets. The resident said officers used to be stationed here, but have since left.

“There was some policing but it is worse than ever now,” he said.

He said public urination along the side streets has since become a big issue, as well as customers being noisy outside of the establishments.

Hennessy confirmed that there were officers stationed at these locations, but they had to be moved to tend to other issues in the precinct.

Hasin Ishraque, a resident who lives in the vicinity of these bars, also complained about the noise as customers leave the bars.

He said that between 11:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. there are people hanging out and screaming as they head home after a night of drinking. This noise often wakes him up, he added.

The next morning it is even worse, he said.

“There is always broken bottles and vomit in the morning.”

He said the problem is at its worst on the weekends.

A third resident said the noise comes from the back of the bars and often can be heard along the side streets at 2 or 3 a.m.

Hennessy reiterated that the precinct is aware of this issue.

“We issue summonses, but with the money these bars take in, one summons isn’t going to shut them down,” he said.

He added that the precinct would continue to monitor these bars, hand out summonses if the noise is too loud, and noted that there are “investigations ongoing.”

He also added that he would look into stationing officers by the bars again.

“It takes time and I ask everyone to bear with me,” he said.
