An East Elmhurst woman has been sentenced to three years in prison following the brutal slashing of her boyfriend with a samurai sword in June 2016.

Karla Barba, 40, of 31st Avenue, was found guilty of second-degree assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child in January, and was sentenced yesterday.

“This was a brutal attack. The scene had blood puddles on the floor and crimson red streaks on the walls,” Chief Assistant John M. Ryan said, speaking on behalf of Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. “The court’s sentence is more than appropriate,” he added.

The near-fatal attack started shortly after an argument broke out between Barba and her live-in boyfriend Franklin Larrea in the bedroom of his 12-year-old son, according to trial testimony.

Larrea pulled Barba from the boy’s room and she retaliated by grabbing a samurai sword that was in its sheath and striking the 40-year-old victim in the head.

The sheath came off as she struck Larrea again, slicing through the victim’s forearm and his wrist and cutting him to the bone. Larrea was taken to a nearby hospital, where he needed an emergency blood transfusion to save his life.

Barba has also been sentenced to two years post release supervision after completing her prison time.

JHeights my whole life

She opens a guy up with a sword and then is sentenced to only 3 years. What a great time to be a violent criminal.

The victim was standing on the southbound M/R platform at the 59th Avenue subway station on the Queens Boulevard line when a stranger approached her and touched her left buttocks, police said. The brute fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. The woman was not injured during the incident.
